How to play Wordle

Wordle gives you six tries to guess a hidden five-letter word. After each guess the tiles change color to show how close you are, and everyone gets the same word each day.

The rules

  1. 1Type any real five-letter word and press enter.
  2. 2A green tile means the letter is in the word and in that exact spot.
  3. 3A yellow tile means the letter is in the word but in a different spot.
  4. 4A gray tile means the letter isn't in the word, or isn't in it as many times as you used it.
  5. 5Use what you learn to make your next guess. You have six guesses in total.
  6. 6In hard mode, every green and yellow letter you've found must be used in later guesses.

Tips for solving

  • Start with a word that tests common letters, such as one with E, A, R, T, S or L and two vowels.
  • Your second guess can use five fresh letters rather than chasing one yellow tile.
  • Remember that letters can repeat. If you're stuck, try a double letter.
  • A gray tile on a repeated letter means the word has fewer copies of it than you guessed, not necessarily none.
  • Before guessing, list the words that still fit. When several differ by one letter, pick a guess that tests several of those letters at once.

How NudgeHint's Wordle hints work

Our hints start with how many vowels the word has and whether any letter repeats.

Then we give the first letter, then the last letter, then the vowels in place with the other letters hidden.

The answer is the last step and stays hidden until you click it.
