Wordle solver

Type each guess you've played, tap the tiles to match the colors you saw, and find out how many five-letter words still fit. The list stays hidden until you ask for it.

How the solver checks each word

For every word in our list, the solver works out the colors your guess would have shown if that word were the answer, using the same rules as the game: exact matches turn green first, then each leftover letter turns yellow only while the answer still has an unmatched copy of it, and everything else turns gray. A word is kept only if it gives exactly the colors you entered for every guess. That is why repeated letters are handled correctly. Some worked examples:

GuessIf the answer wereColors
SLATECRANEgray, gray, green, gray, green
EERIECRANEgray, gray, yellow, gray, green
BABESABBEYyellow, yellow, green, green, gray

Where the word list comes from

The solver uses about 5,000 five-letter words from SCOWL, the open word lists behind many spell checkers, at the size used by standard American English dictionaries. Names, abbreviations and offensive words are left out. The game's own answer list is shorter, so some words shown here will never be a Wordle answer. The list downloads to your browser the first time you add a guess, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. See the word list license.
